Popular Christmas Traditions Around The World

Christmas time is here again and people are questioning themselves where they are going to celebrate the holidays. This is the season for commemorating and keeping traditions practiced for many years now.

Most of us are familiar with greeting cards which are the most popular among the Christmas customs. The giving of greeting cards dates back to the year 1830 initiated by John Calcott Horsley who was then in England and R.H Pease, in America. They exchanged tiny cards with written messages on them and this became more common as the postal service came into being. Until now, this tradition has not changed pace and is still as well-liked as before.

Most people become alive during the holidays with the singing of carols. This tradition originated in England when a traveling musical group started to sing Christmas songs to affluent families that they visited. This was done in exchange of food to eat, money to get them by and other gifts. This custom has been carried on until today.

The presence of Santa Claus is a belief that has become tradition to many people; especially kids. They are made to believe that Santa will be giving them gifts that they desire during this season. They are also informed that this is possible only if they have done good deeds to Santa's delight. Families have been doing this as a Christmas habit and this tradition is already written in history.

The hanging of mistletoe is another habit that is commonly done during the Christmas season. Believed to be coming way back from the Victorian era, the mistletoe is hung in strategic places inside the house. It possesses magical powers increasing the chances of a person to become fertile, and if caught underneath the mistletoe, someone in the house is requested to render a kiss.

Another seemingly popular practice is the hanging of socks from the bed. This is a common tradition among children with the belief that they will be receiving small gifts placed inside the socks. There is a story behind this belief, wherein a monk was able to save the lives of three girls by paying their dowries in order for them not to be sold in exchange for money. The monk threw gold from the roof of the house and it landed on window sills, chimneys and stockings and was able to save the three girl's lives. This story began the tradition of the hanging of socks.

Every year, we celebrate the tradition of Christmas and these several traditions that make the celebration more real and meaningful, especially for the children.
