Popular Lottery Myths Busted

1. When you play the lottery you are more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than winning.

There may be some truth in this myth for a very small percentage of lotteries that have unbelievably bad odds. However, for most lotteries it is just untrue. In an article in Public Gaming International magazine back in 1997 it was shown that this myth is totally untrue by a doctor of physics and a lottery commissioner for Iowa Dr. Edward Stanek.

In the USA in 1996 ninety-one unfortunate people were struck by lightning and died as a result. In contrast well over one thousand people won over a million on lottery draws while four and a half thousand won over, or at least, one-hundred thousand dollars!

Then there are many , many thousands of players who won over ten thousand dollars.

2. Lotteries are used to tax the people!

This is complete hogwash! A tax is a compulsory payment that you must make to the government or you risk going to jail. Playing the lottery, on the other hand, is a matter of personal choice. You do not have to play or pay!

3. Lotteries target poor people who can't afford to play.

For company to be profitable, including lottery companies, they must target potential customers who can buy their products. Targeting poor people who cannot afford to buy your product is not good business sense!

People from all walks of life and with differing financial statuses play and win the lottery.

4. The only people who get any benefit from playing the lottery are those lucky people who win big!

Although this is one of the most popular myths about lottos it is by far the easiest to bust.

For starters lottery companies are almost always engaged with local and national charities. A great example is the British lottery which not only supports many charities but also invests in local and national business throughout the United Kingdom.

Just like any other pay point sale the retailer who sells you your lotto ticket gets a percentage of the sale. Employment is a by-product of lotteries from jobs for the lottery company to jobs in shops and in supporting companies. The filter effect in employment due to the lottery goes well beyond the lottery company.

At the end of the day the lotto is also a game and games bring enjoyment. Is it worth a buck or two to enjoy the experience?

5. Lotteries create compulsive gamblers!

Anyone who has personal experience of someone with an addiction knows all too well that people with addictive personalities disable certain characteristics. Gambling addiction is a compulsive behaviour that has its roots in psychological and possibly physiological causes.

Surveys have shown that gambling addiction is not affected by the presence or the absence of the lottery. Very few compulsive gamblers are satisfied with lottery gambles and seek much more immediate and larger scale bets.
