Portuguese chaps are made in the same manner as their predecessors
, fitting over the lower leg like a boot, providing support and "grip". Portuguese chaps are also known as olive leaf chaps for their appearance. These chaps button up the outer sides in a pattern that is reminiscent to the Portuguese as that of an olive leaf.
The riding gear of Portugal has not changed much throughout the country's history. The gear was created with form and function in mind. Unlike most chaps design, the Portuguese version was designed back from a time when men did not wear pants. The lower legs had to be protected; therefore they were covered by the soft leather of the chap. This leather also helped the rider grip the belly of the horse long before stirrups were invented.
These chaps come in "full" or "half" chaps, although it is the "half chaps" that you see most often in shows. While this style of chap is usually only found today on riders in the equitation ring, it is still a "functional" element of riding. The leather chap functions much as the Wellington style book or "hunter" boot does in English riding.
There is one other style of chaps made in Europe, but is not considered part of the "equestrian" tradition and that is the "Montaria" chaps. These chaps were worn over the torso by the huntsman on foot that assisted nobles in their hunt rides.
Finding these chaps is not always easy outside of Europe. Most have to be special ordered, but they are a beautiful addition to the collection of any equestrian event enthusiast. Their beautiful design and functional form gives "pop" to your show style. They are considered fully functional and approved for rings.
