Possibilities with Wheelchair Vans
Wheelchair vans come in several styles and sizes, with different modification potentials and feature options. Several questions should be answered when looking to purchase a wheelchair van. Is the disabled person going to drive? How much can be afforded? Can the disabled person move to a seat in the van, or will he or she be riding in the wheelchair? Is the van for local or long distance use? These are a few questions that should be considered.
Types
Wheelchair vans are available in two basic styles: minivan and full-sized van. The full-sized van has more interior space but may be difficult to maneuver. The minivan may have a smaller interior, but has a compact build and is easier to drive and maneuver, especially for a disabled person. Either style vehicle can be equipped with any number of options, lifts, driving alternatives, seating options, not to mention basic comfort features.
Potential Modifications
Wheelchair vans can be equipped to carry the wheelchair inside or outside. Hitch mounted, or outside, lifts are generally the least expensive. They are also easy to operate and easy to load and unload. These lifts carry the wheelchair outside the car on a platform attached to the trailer hitch. They can be used with any type of vehicle including cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, and RVs.
Inside lifts can be used to store the wheelchair inside the van for travel, or to provide seating for the disabled person by locking the wheelchair in place on the platform used to lift it into the van. Which option is chosen depends on the needs of the disabled person. These are also fairly inexpensive and worth the cost to make the transportation of handicapped family and friends simple.
These vans can also be equipped with hand controls allowing the handicapped person to operate the vehicle independently. In addition, lifts can be used, and other modifications made, that allow the disabled person operating the vehicle to remain in his or her wheelchair, making transportation even easier.
Freedom in Mobility
Wheelchair vans provide a freedom and independence in mobility for the handicapped person that little else can. Handicapped people no longer have to rely on friends and family members to take them where they need to go even if it's just to a simple doctor's appointment. As technology progresses rapidly, the ease of travel for the handicapped person should only improve over time.
