Possible Backstories To Famous Gold Quotations
There are some phrases, such as "Silence is golden" or "All that shines is not gold" that appear in all sorts of context in our every day life
. The precious metal is to be found in literature, in speeches, in essays, some as old as the written word. It is most often used to convey the idea of value, either by attachment or by contrast. Here are some quotes that you might find go deeper than this primary sense.
Marguerite Gardiner, countess of Blessington, was a 19th century writer of journals who spent most of her adult life traveling across Europe and then settled as a host of great figures of her time. Two of these were Lord Byron (this later lead to her publishing "Conversations with Lord Byron") and Benjamin Disraeli, politician and writer. It is perhaps by witnessing these men at work that she was inspired to say that "Genius is the gold in the mine; talent is the miner who brings it out".
The following quote comes from another writer, this time of politically-inspired fiction (such as Gullivers Travels), Jonathan Swift: "It is in men, as in soils, where sometimes there is a vein of gold which the owner knows not." The great author had plenty of chances to study people, as he served a distinguished retired politician, had many friends, led a parish and counseled the head statesmen of Queen Annes reign. In this capacity he may have often been witness to that amazing moment in some peoples lives, when events make them act in such a way as to reveal certain features and strengths previously unknown even to himself.
Zen is a branch of Buddhism that encourages practice over theory. A person does not need any theoretical training or extensive reading in order to learn Zen techniques, but rather lots and lots of exercise. It is the way with Zen masters that they make fun of the pretentiousness of some peoples attitudes towards Zen. Thus, it is clear why one of their sayings goes "Learning Zen is a phenomenon of gold and dung. Before you understand it, its like gold; after you understand it, its like dung."
Ovid, or Publius Ovidius Naso by his full name, was a Roman poet who became quite popular in his time for a series of erotic poems. But his time was a troubled one (one decade before the year 1 AD), and he surely got to see many persons turn on their friends and allies. His own fame proved to be insignificant in the face of king Augustus decision to exile him to the Black Sea port of Tomis (nowadays Constanta). He was so determined to think up the well known saying: "As the yellow gold is tried in fire, so the faith of friendship must be seen in adversity.
