Pregnancy could be the most crucial stage for women
. A woman should be very responsible and careful on everything she does. There are several factors that a pregnant woman should consider during pregnancy; like the food that she eats, drugs that she take and any possible condition or situation that may increase the risks during pregnancy.
Drugs or medications can be one of the possible factors that can cause birth defects. Birth defects are defined as the abnormalities of structures, functions or body metabolism that are present at birth. Medications like antibiotic can block the functions of folic acid to the body of a pregnant woman. Lack of folic acid or folate may result to some brain defects to the baby. Folic deficiency also may cause some serious neutral tube defects to the baby or problems with the development of the spinal cord. To prevent such serious problems, pregnant mothers are asked if they are currently taking such medications to avoid complications.
Pregnant women should also avoid doing some self-defeating behaviors such as smoking, taking illicit drugs and alcohol. All of these may cause miscarriage and birth defects.
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol syndrome. It is a condition wherein there are will be several birth abnormalities present in a new born baby. It could be brain disorders and malfunctioning of some vital parts of their body.
Illicit drugs can be in the form of cocaine, marijuana and other illegal drugs. Taking these during pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage. It could also affect the development of the fetus that can cause some complications and serious problems to the newborns.
Smoking Cigarettes can result to premature labor to pregnant mothers. Cigarette smoking could be one of the contributing factors why there is an increasing problem like placenta abruptio, placenta previa and premature rupture of the membrane.
Problems occur during pregnancy can be unpredictable; that is why full responsibility and proper care should considered. Proper knowledge is the key to have a healthy pregnancy and have a healthy baby.
