Post and parcel delivery companies praised for response to ash crisis
Contingency plans which were put in place to help international parcel delivery companies adjust their services following the disruption caused by the long-lasting Icelandic ash cloud have been praised by Europe's leading postal services watchdog. PostEurop said postal operators across Europe had done well to maintain close contact with their air, road and rail delivery partners, and collaborate with a view to keeping delays to international parcel and mail deliveries to a minimum.
The biggest obstacle to the continued effective operation of parcel delivery services had been the closure of many airports, often including vital hubs which see large volumes of parcel and mail traffic transferred between planes, as well as onto other modes of transport for the completion of their journeys. The longer the distance a parcel needed to be sent, the more likely it was to encounter delays somewhere on its journey. But some long-distance parcel delivery journeys had been switched from air to road or rail, ensuring that they could avoid the disruption in the skies.
Secretary General of PostEurop, Botond Szebeny, said that on the whole European delivery companies had co-operated well to further reduce disruption, and their hard-pressed customer service teams had managed to gather relevant information for clients, and pass it on in a timely fashion.
The ash cloud had been a totally unforeseen event, he added, but it had amply demonstrated the value of delivery companies working together to implement the wide-scale contingency plan, which had helped minimise delays and disruption. While many flights had been prevented from taking off, the ash cloud upheaval also tested courier companies' alternative plans to keep as normal a delivery service running as possible.
In most cases, these had been successful, with massive fleets of trains, lorries, vans and cars seeing additional use, as well as extra burdens being shifted onto the seas and oceans to help keep worldwide parcel delivery networks running smoothly. Few observers could have foreseen the extent of the disruption which the ash clouds from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano caused over more than a month, and even when flights were supposedly getting back to normal, there were several reports of planes making unscheduled landings having encountered airborne plumes of volcanic ash.
But the way in which the replacement transport swung into action proved that, when necessary, courier companies know the value of having robust and flexible back-up plans in place, reassuring millions of people of their determination to let as little as possible prevent them from operating an extensive and punctual service.
