Poster Girl For Womens Labor Movement Dies
The women who inspired the iconic poster that encouraged young women to enter the workforce has died at the age of 86.
Geraldine Hoff Doyle, who passed away on December 26, is the woman depicted in the famous "Rose the Riveter" World War II poster, which shows a flexing woman wearing a factory uniform and red polka dot kerchief. Under her likeness is a speech balloon that says "We can do it!" The image was intended to get more women to go to work while men were overseas fighting in WWII.
According to the New York Daily News, about 6 million women entered the workforce during WWII, forever changing the perception of gender roles in America. In most cases, females have just as much opportunity to advance their career as men do.
According to a report by the American Council on Education, about 57 percent of students who attend American colleges and universities are female. While females hold the majority in the country's college student population, the U.S. Department of Education reveals that the degree programs with the highest earning potential are dominated by men.
Earlier this year, Forbes magazine published the data, which showed that 83 percent of students who are specializing in engineering are men. Similarly, about 82 percent of computer and information science majors are male. These fields are expected to grow significantly in the next eight years, and they are among the top-paying careers in the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The news provider revealed that business is the most common major for women. Other common careers for females include teaching, writing, public relations and sales. However, the fastest-growing jobs for women are in healthcare, such as pharmacists, doctors and occupational therapists, according to Forbes.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, about 60 percent of women in the U.S. were active in the labor force in 2009, which meant that they were either working or looking for a job. Females comprised of about 47 percent of the total American workforce last year, and they are projected to account for about 51 percent of the increase in total workers over the next eight years.
So while the woman who inspired the famous Rose the Riveter posted has died, the impact of her image is being felt in college classes and offices throughout America.
