Posting items abroad now opens up a world of choice
Countries around the world have steadily been freeing up their postal services markets, allowing in varying degrees of competition with the objective of giving both individuals and businesses a choice of more services with the emphasis on them being tailored to meet specific needs.
The biggest beneficiaries of this deregulation so far have been business customers. Understandably, those which send large volumes of mail and parcels are being wooed with offers of substantial discounts on their postage costs, and collection times which can be more flexible than those traditionally provided by the incumbent national operators.
The companies which so far have been quickest to take advantage of this new freedom are, in the main, those which potentially had the most to gain by way of savings on their postage costs. These will be enterprises which send out large numbers of items, especially if they can vary widely in size and weight. But other benefits are offered to firms whose post is all the same size, or which consists exclusively of letters, with little or no heavy packages involved.
In many cases, the final leg of the delivery is carried out by the state operator, and this is certainly true of much of the business mail which is sent in the UK. The mail is simply collected and sorted by a third party, and delivered to a central sorting office, where the state-owned provider adds it to its own mail for delivery, and loads it into the same bags for its dedicated delivery staff to take those last few miles to its destination.
Sending letters or goods long-distance is an area in which mail and parcel delivery businesses with sufficient resources can compete with longer-standing providers. Usually, they do this on the basis of carrying items on the central core of their journey themselves, while letting another business take care of either the collecting of the item, or the final leg of its journey.
In many cases, the sender or recipient is not aware that their item will have passed through another delivery company's hands than the one with which it started its trip. That is the beauty of the seamless operation of so much just in time' delivery it is a literal game of pass the parcel', with the extensive manpower and resources of each respective delivery company acting as a solid link in an unbroken chain. It's practical proof of the old adage two heads are better than one', and it is bringing real benefits to businesses which rely on dependable delivery services every day.
When international postage is needed to get goods reliably to their destination, a robust system of courier exchange ensures that packages enjoy a seamless, trouble-free journey.
