Potholes, one of the UK's top subject to have a moan and groan about. Personally I thought that there was a problem but on a recent trip to Sheffield it was really brought home to me how bad it is.

Driving around the city I was surprised how bad the situation in some parts of the UK actually is. It has been reported that repairing damage caused by potholes could hit 1 billion in 2011. This is a serious problem for drivers and insurers. The report detailed that the average cost of a repair hit 312 and the highest cost had been around 4,000. The report showed that 6% of vehicles suffered suspension and axle damage whilst a further 6% had damaged types and wheels.

The severe bad weather has resulted in a sharp rise in the incidents of new potholes but as there is little work being completed on the worst roads the existing potholes are getting worse. Repeated use of poor roads especially driving through a pothole works to break up the road even more. As the road breaks up the potholes get wider and deeper.

The British roads have been severely underfunded for a number of years and it is thought that this will continue. Whilst the Government has injected around 100 million it is thought that this will not even touch the sides of the nation's problem.

The majority of the UK people would probably resist this "selling off" of the nations assets especially as it would mean road tolls. Another view would be to add a small amount to road tax, the amount that is added could be ring fenced to pay for the damage to roads.
