Potholes to Be Filled In
Following on from our article on yesterday's budget we thought we would bring it to your attention that the government has listened to its people and decided to do something about the potholes. Now we could have included this in our previous article but as we had covered this issue earlier this month we decided a whole review needed to be done.
Whilst you are online make sure you Compare Car Insurance quotes and make sure you are not paying too much for your policy.
In our recent article we commented on how bad the problems of potholes had become and how this was causing high claims on motoring policies. So yesterday the chancellor announced that they had set aside 100 million which will be distributed to councils which will be used to fix the roads.
Whilst this may seem like a huge figure it had been previously estimated that the total cost to fix the current problems could hit nearer 1 billion. So 100 million will fix a mere 10% and this is at today's problems, this doesn't include the cost of the everyday wear and tear that is occurring due to the huge time lapse since the roads were fixed.
Companies such as Warranty Direct have already come out and welcomed the news. They are however treating it with kid gloves and saying that instead of one of hits there needs to be a long term strategy to deal with the roads. It is thought that a 10 year plan of redevelopment would best fit the problem due to the long standing issues that we face.
The managing direction of Warranty Direct stated that "motorists will appreciate the extra support and it will mean less cars get damaged". We agree many motorists such as those in the worst hit areas will welcome the news that the Government is noticing that this is a major problem faced by UK residents in the UK. The problem has been worsened due to the bitter winter that we have just faced and the amount of snow and ice that formed on the road surface.
It is unclear how this money will be split between councils; you would hope that the funds will be split on an equal footing. This policy would mean that areas with the worst roads would get more of the pot, and those who are least affected would get a lesser amount. It is also unclear if these funds will be ring fenced for road use only. Speaking to many people it is felt that historic funds set aside for the roads had been funnelled to other areas when money got tight.
The good news is that in the next few months hopefully we will all see workers out on the roads fixing the current problem. Once we hear any more information about roll out period or how the funds will be distributed we will update you. We will be keeping our eyes open to see if there are high visibility jackets in the road in the next few months.
