A puppy has to be taken out very often, so make it a routine to take him/her out every hour. He/she wont defecate or pee every time you take him/her out, but even if he or she goes twice or thrice, it is an effort that has not gone to waste.
When you tell him/her to pee, you need to use a particular command. It could be "Go potty" or something else you could come up with. You'll need to repeat it every single time you take him/her out to go to the bathroom.
Remember that dogs seek out the scent of their own pee every time they have to do their job, so don't even bother cleaning up the yard. However, if he/she has peed in your household, properly clean it, or he/she will tend to pee again inside your home. A simple wipe down will not suffice, a dog has a heightened sense of smell. You need to use a strong disinfectant if you want to cover up that smell.
You are going to want to take him/her out once they have woke up, dogs tend to have to pee after a dreamy slumber. If you begin playing with him, then you are asking for trouble. Potty time always comes first. Right before you go to bed and as soon as you get up, you need to be sure to take him/her out. Water intake at night needs to be very limited. This is a smart habit to get into, to be sure he or she doesn't have to pee at night.
Keeping Them in a Kennel or Animal Carrier
You could put him/her in a kennel or an animal carrier at night. You don't want it to be too big of a space or the dog may do his/her stuff in a certain corner. It should be big enough to hold his/her bed and allow him/her to turn around comfortably. Dogs wont go to the bathroom where they sleep, they will control it until you let them out. Don't let him/her wander about once you have released them. Immediately take him/her out.
It takes time for a dog to get used to a routine, so when you potty train your Cocker Spaniel, you must have a lot of patience. You should never get to the point of hollering or losing your temper. You'll just end up scaring and confusing him or her. If he or she soils your carpet, do not rub his/her face in the poop. That is simply cruel. You are not going to achieve anything taking your frustrations out on a defenseless little puppy.
You need to have a little dog door in your home. Once your dog knows he/she needs to do his or her job outdoors, make it easy for him/her to go out whenever he or she needs to. If you see him or her whining and or scratching at the door, it means he or she has to pee. A doggy door will save you the hassle of taking him or her out every time.
