Potty Training Advice For The Stubborn Toddler

It's probably a parent's worst nightmare when it comes to potty training a toddler;

having a stubborn child who is resisting efforts to teach them to use the toilet. If you're worried about this for your own little one, then take a few things into account before the process even begins, to make sure the child is even ready to learn. All the advice on how to potty train won't do any good if they're too young or not emotionally or psychologically ready. So keep in mind that some kids aren't in the right position to learn this new skill until they're almost three years old.

One good way to divert your child's attention away from just resisting your will and instead making the toilet training process something they're keenly interested in may be to get them involved in making it work. If they get to choose which underwear they'll use, for example, or pick out their own potty chair or toilet seat, they may become much more willing to learn. In discerning how to potty train a stubborn child, sometimes it's simply a matter of making it their own project.

Another tip for potty training a toddler who may be somewhat stubborn comprises a little bit of trickery. If your child's diaper needs changing, rather than cleaning things up immediately, you might wait a little more time than usual to change it. Gradually, they will associate a feeling of discomfort with the diaper.

This might seem a slightly underhanded means of potty training, but the purpose of your overall training program is to help make it their own idea to get out of those diapers on a permanent basis and begin using the bathroom.

The point of drawing your child into toilet training by means of their own interest and curiosity is that you avoid setting up a "parent-versus-child" battleground. If you can learn how to potty train by getting your toddler on board with the idea and interested enough to cooperate, you will save both of you a lot of grief. If you rouse them to oppose the idea, however, the two of you will fight constant battles which the child is always likely to win. If you can manage it, then it will be far better to find ways to encourage them to be interested and cooperative instead.
