Potty Training Isn't Hard - Tips On Taking The Easy Route
Potty training isn't something that has to be difficult and is fairly easy however with articles proclaiming that you can potty train your child very early and this often sets up an unrealistic expectation of a child. Why? Not every child will be ready at a super early age to potty train and if they aren't ready, particularly socially and emotionally, you will have a battle on your hands in trying to get them to do what you want.
Every child is different - we hear this all the time when it comes to developmental milestones like walking and talking, so why should we consider potty training to be any different? We shouldn't, however we can feel anxious and feel like we are bad parents when we hear stories of other mothers getting their child potty trained before they are 2 years old and these stories are only reinforced by the many articles on the internet backing them up.
Unfortunately a child usually is not ready to potty train early and while these mothers claim their child is trained, it would have taken a lot of unnecessary work to get them to use the potty and to be consistent.
The best time to try to potty train is when your child shows signs of readiness. Signs of readiness include:
Being aware they are wet and asking you to change them.
Being able to tell you when they need the toilet or when they are going to the toilet in their diaper.
Dislike for wearing a soiled diaper.
Social and emotional readiness - they want to use the potty/toilet.
The last one is probably the most important and if your child doesn't shown signs of it, don't worry. You can try the potty out with them but don't force it upon them - it really will only cause upset and stress which neither of your want or need! For my son, he decided just after he turned 2 to that he wanted to use the toilet. Since then he has pretty much trained himself. I had no stress or hassle trying to get him to use the toilet. He wouldn't use the potty though because he preferred to use the toilet like me and his dad which is great! He is nearly 3 now and even dry at night with no accidents. He wakes up at 12 to use the bathroom then stays dry until morning. This has all been very easy for us.
He did have some accidents to begin with as wearing clothes often confused him and made him think he was wearing a nappy but he soon got over this.
I also think that rewards are not a good idea when it comes to potty training and are unnecessary. My son wanted to use the toilet and I think comes down to children wanting to mimic their parents. So in this case, just make sure your child sees you go. My son always went to the toilet with his dad in the mornings and he always followed me in. He has never been rewarded for using the potty or the toilet - I don't think children need an incentive to use the toilet and this could be counter productive. When a child is ready they are ready.
