Potty Training Your Puppy - How to Avoid the Frustration
If you are in the process of potty training your puppy, you have probably experienced the frustration of finding an "accident" in the house. Fortunately, there are a number of things that you can do in order to avoid situations like that. For a start, always remember that potty training your puppy can be a long process and should never be rushed. Having patience can go a long way, as any rushing will only serve to set you back further and delay your progress.
Another equally important thing to remember while potty training your puppy is that you must be consistent. Consistency will make it clear to your puppy what you expect from him every time and will serve to make the whole process smoother. Choose a few verbal commands, and stick to them! Setting schedules for when to take your puppy outside is also very effective, as you and your puppy can know what to expect at certain times. One good rule is to always take your puppy outside 15-20 minutes after a meal or drink.
You may also wish to try crate training. It is an extremely effective and efficient method of potty training your puppy and many, many owners have reported success using it. It is based on the fact that a dog will not soil his "den," which in this case, is his crate. Because of this, it is important that the crate only be large enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around, and lay down. Any bigger, and he will find space to eliminate himself, which is the exact opposite of crate training. If you use this method, you will have to be very vigilant about when to take him outside. Also do not expect to just leave your puppy in the crate for several hours at a time, especially in the beginning.
One product that you'll always want to have on hand when potty training your puppy is an odor eliminator. Remember to always thoroughly clean up accidents right away and remove odors with an odor eliminator. Dogs will eliminate themselves again on areas where they can smell the odors. They have a very keen sense of smell, so it is not good enough to just wipe up the mess, even if you aren't able to smell any odors!
