Powering Along At Gale Force Section B
"That's why you're here
"That's why you're here. Isn't it?" queries the blonde, bobbing through from the kitchen in the midst of tea making. Yes. So what are her expectations of the film? "Well, I don't know how it will work really with an American in the role," she ponders diplomatically. "The Avengers is such an English concept. Americans can't really play English and vice-versa." And as the archetypal feisty English rose, Blackman contents herself with the knowledge that she'll be reviewing Thurman's performance for the BBC.
Catsuits at dawn?
We're on to the infamous leather cat-suit now. Dispelling any theories about pandering to English gents' fantasies, Blackman insists the choice of black leather was purely practical. "In the beginning I'd wear these trousers but because I was so physical, they split mid-shot one day." She demonstrates by jumping up from the settee and bending her knees. "Riiiip! Of course, there was a wave of embarrassed coughs and spluttering from behind," she giggles. Flexible suede was first suggested then rejected because it absorbed the light. Leather was seized upon as the natural material for the all-action TV heroine. "My first suit was actually green and then it became black and then along came the
boots, and then the boots got higher and my skirts got shorter," she muses.
Surprisingly, the strong-willed Blackman tired of her fighting role ("there are only so many exciting MI5 adventures you can have before they become repetitive") and decided to move on. She declines to comment on the performance of her descendants - Dame Diane Rigg, Linda Thorson, and Joanna Lumley - pleading ignorance at never having caught them on telly. But she recalls one incident when she made a Pavlovian response on overhearing a snatch of familiar dialogue. "My husband was watching it on TV, when I heard Steed say something and automatically replied. They were obviously re-using old lines and plots,'' she reckons.
With accusations of "traitor" still ringing in her
Spandex zentai at leaving a "top of the pops show", Blackman's next challenge, as the improbably named Pussy Galore in Goldfinger, was to cement her First Lady Of Fantasy mantle. Despite the infamous opening line, "You can switch off the charm, Mr Bond. I am immune," Blackman still confesses herself deliciously enamoured by Sean Connery's Bond. "Ooooh. He really is the sexiest thing on two legs," she giggles coquettishly. Coincidentally, Connery plays his first villainous role in the movie version of The Avengers as August De Wynter.
