Practical Gift Giving For Dad
With Father's Day approaching, the search is on. You know the one, the search for the perfect gift for dad. You have crashed and burned before. You tried going the sentimental route and that didn't work. You tried getting him something related to one of his hobbies, but you didn't quite get him what he wanted. Eventually you just settled for the comfortable, but boring tradition of neckties and coffee mugs. Now your father could where a different tie everyday of the month, and he hasn't had to wash a coffee mug for two weeks! Sure, another tie, mug, or other similar stereotypical gift will suffice for this year's Father's Dadyour dad will smile and express his appreciation for your token giftbut why not get your father something he could really use?
Though some dads enjoy sentimental or special interest related gifts, many dads enjoy receiving practical gifts. Some dads feel uncomfortable receiving gifts from their children, worrying about money spent. For such a person, some of that tension is relieved when he finds out that the money that has been spent on him will be put to good use. Here are a few ideas for practical gift ideas for dad:
Hardware/Workshop
Cordless Drill. Every dad has to have a drill. If your dad doesn't have a cordless drill, this should be first on your list. Even if your dad already has a cordless drill, it may be old and need replaced. Many manufacturers now sell power tool packages that have batteries that are interchangeable between tools.
Ladder. A step ladder has a multitude of uses, and is relatively inexpensive. Longer ladders are needed for more challenging jobs, though even something as simple as cleaning the gutters requires a long ladder.
Air Compressor. You can't go wrong with an air compressor. Air compressors provide unparalleled power for a multitude of tools. If you buy and air compressor, make sure that you also purchase compressor oil and any other pertinent compressor parts. If you father already has an air compressor, consider giving him a new tool for his machine. Help him keep his equipment in good shape by restocking his compressor oil and replacing any compressor parts that may have broken.
Technology/Media
Television. Is a television practical? You bet! Your dad is going to have a tv in his home, right? A new tv makes a great gift. Especially if your father is still using an analogue tv, a digital, high definition tv is an excellent Father's Day gift. Remember to measure his tv cabinet or stand before purchasing a new tv.
GPS. GPS devices have come down in price in recent years. These devices are incredibly useful when trying to navigate in unfamiliar areas. Business trips, vacations, and other travel excursions are much smoother with the use of a GPS.
Webcam. Your dad might not be a tech nut, but he might enjoy connecting with friends and family who have moved away. Skype is easy to use and free, though it requires a webcam. Especially if you have moved away, and especially if your dad has grandkids who live out of town, a webcam makes an excellent gift.
