Practical Tips for Tacking a Head Lice Infestation
Have you been irritated by a recent head lice infestation
? You may have tried to rid your home and family of the parasites, only to find that they keep making an unwanted reappearance. Completely ridding your home of the parasitic blood suckers can be a frustrating task to say the least; but with the right information, tools and techniques, you'll soon get your home back to a parasite free zone. How to Deal with a Head Lice Infestation An infestation from these critters requires attention in two areas; the host and the home. When treating the situation on the host, usually your child, many parents immediately opt for over the counter products; however, many of these remedies contain pesticides. Even if they are deemed safe, pesticides are still chemicals that are designed to kill living things, not the sort of thing you might want to put on your child's head. Some parents prefer to treat the host with alternative remedies, rather than run the risk of using such chemicals. Alternative remedies and solutions for these blood sucking parasites are more effective than you think. After all, how do you think people removed their unwanted parasitic guests prior to these chemical products? These remedies are much more cost effective too. Treating the Host The most important tool you need for solving the situation on the host is a nit comb. Don't waste time with the plastic complimentary combs that come with chemical over the counter treatments, and instead invest in a nit comb with finely spaced metallic teeth, as these are far more effective and durable. Some parents prefer the electronic version, which kills the insects on contact by zapping them with an electric charge. Medicated shampoos can also help with the infestations. Use the shampoo on dry hair, and once thoroughly rinsed off, use the comb to check the hair for any leftover insects or eggs (called nits). You must tackle nits as much as you tackle the live insects. Nits are the eggs that the insects lay; left untreated, they could hatch two weeks later, and start a fresh insect community on your child's head. Soaking the hair for 30 minutes in white vinegar will help to break down the substance used to attach these eggs to the hair. Use the comb after you have rinsed out the vinegar to remove the eggs and any insects dragged out by the comb. Treating the Home Once you have treated your child, you must immediately follow that up with a regime of cleaning that will tackle the infestation from your home head on. Start by stripping all bedding from the beds, and placing any bedding in your washing machine on a hot wash cycle. Any bedding that cannot be washed should be tumble dried for at least 20 minutes, or dry-cleaned. Vacuum your mattresses, carpets and your vehicle upholstery. Place teddies and other plush toys in an air tight container. If you can keep the container in a garage, so much the better! Do not reopen the boxes for two weeks. Of course, once you are sure that you have eradicated the parasite infestation, you must take proactive measures to prevent another infestation from occurring. Make sure your family is aware of the things they could do to prevent any parasites from infesting the home again.
