Practice Gun Safety Religiously On Your Hunting Expeditions
When it comes to hunting game in America, there are a lot of options available
. In the Southern states, deer hunting remains to be one of the most popular types of game for hunters and for good reason. It is great to eat. Americans have been eating venison for hundreds of years and it is still a good food source. Deer are very plentiful especially in some of the Southern states and that makes it easy to hunt. There certainly has not been any danger of diminishing the deer population because they reproduce so well.
Experienced hunters realize that accidental shootings can occur easily if you don't stay on your toes when you are in the woods. You can accidentally shoot a hunter from another hunting party or even one of your own when proper gun safety is not observed closely enough. Hunting can be very exciting, but you have to keep a cool head and make sure your target is actually game and not another hunter. You might think it would be difficult to shoot a person by mistake thinking they were a deer, but it has happened just because one of the hunters weren't following the rules.
Hunters often wear camouflage apparel that can make it really tough to see them trekking through the woods. Since hunters are usually as quiet as they can be when they hunt, you can easily mistake there muffled sounds for game especially when you can not see them clearly. If it is early hours of the morning or at dusk in the evening, you never want to shoot unless you are absolutely certain it is not another human being you are shooting at. If it is time to put the guns away, make sure you do when it becomes difficult to see. Binoculars can also be useful to help identify your game before you shoot.
Always wear the orange hunting vest that you are supposed to when you are in the woods. This is the one thing that could save your own life. While you don't want to accidentally shoot someone else, you also do not want to be the victim of an accidental shooting either. Some hunters think that alcohol is a necessity on a hunting trip, but it is actually the last thing that is needed. Drinking while hunting is a disaster just waiting to happen. Taking certain medications could mean you should not hunt either if it impairs your vision or clouds your thinking in any way.
Never point your gun carelessly even if you know it is unloaded. Many deaths and injuries have occurred because a hunter waved his firearm around carelessly thinking there were no bullets only to find out they were wrong. Don't load your gun until you are ready to hunt and always unload it when you are finished. You never want your weapon loaded when it does not have to be if you are around other people. It is just one more way to use safety and avoid an unwanted accident.
