Pre Bedtime Meals
Timing does matter.
Your metabolism is at its optimum level during the middle of the day. It begins to slow down just before you go to bed, as it gets ready for sleep. In other words, it's not ready to work off a high calorie meal.
Cooked foods are especially bad.
This is because they lack digestive enzymes. This means the body has to make them on its own, which prevents it from getting the rest it needs.
Often times people have the experience of going to bed after eating a huge cooked meal, only to wake up feeling just as tired. The reason is, it was up all night trying to digest the food.
The body likes to cleanse itself at night, as well as build muscle from the day's workout. It cannot do this if its' busy trying to digest food.
It might even impact you the next day.
If you eat a lot of fatty foods before hitting the sack, you will probably wake up not with no appetite. This will cause you to forego breakfast, which is one of the best times to eat. From there, your whole schedule is out of whack.
So what should you eat?
Ideally you should be consuming lots of raw fruits and veggies before bedtime. This helps clean out the system, which aids in digestion and bowel movement. Fruit smoothies are awesome, and are a great tasting ay to wind down the day.
No matter what, make sure to stay away from spicy and fatty foods, as well as caffeine. These can all hinder your quality of sleep. In general, high water content foods are the best.
Make sure to drink plenty of water as well. This helps you stay hydrated, and also will cleanses the system. You will wake up feeling refreshed and energized, because the body is able to clean itself out better.
So timing does matter.
That's not to say you should starve yourself. Make sure to consume heavy foods no closer than two to three hours before hitting the sack.
Ideally you should be a little hungry when going to bed. Don't overdo it, but feeling slightly hungry is optimum.
If you go at least eleven hours without eating, the body burns a lot of at the fifth hour, and that goes on until morning. So finishing three hours before hitting the sack is ideal. However, two should be sufficient.
Don't forget to consume foods regularly throughout the day. Three square meals is not enough, because it doesn't keep the metabolism going properly. Eating at least four times a day is very important. Try to space your meals every two to three hours to ensure maximum metabolic response.
The bottom line: pre bedtime meals should consist of easy to digest foods. It might take some discipline to stick with this, but the results will be worth it.
