Precautions For Emergency Dental Procedures
For many people visiting a dentist is no less than a nightmare
. The case gets even worse when patients are examined for an emergency dental procedure. Apart from the anxiety of the pain, the patient dreads the possibility of further damage due to incisions and drilling. However, there are also some overcautious and doubting patients who fear dental visits without much relevant reason. They are exaggeratedly termed to carry dental phobia. They are known to experience severe anxiety and panic attacks even for simple procedures like dental cleaning.
Then there is a third category of dental patients who are already challenged by underlying disease conditions that make them more vulnerable to health issues caused due to the stress and pressure of having a dental procedure done. These patients require more care and attention so as to prevent any untoward mishaps. Such patients mainly include those suffering from cardiac conditions, hypertension, arrhythmia, anxiety etc.
A more serious issue relating to emergency dental surgeries involves the use of anesthesia. A general anesthesia can trigger the symptoms of a preexisting cardiovascular condition and cause unexpected complications. Therefore, if you are unsure about the working of a general anesthesia in view of your underlying condition or panic syndrome, then get the issue straightened out with your dental surgeon. Consequently, he would settle in for a local anesthesia which is fairly risk free. Even in case of local anesthesia, there would be complications if the injection also contains vasoconstrictors. Vasoconstrictors are meant for lowering hypertension which is expected to rise in case of a tooth removal procedure. Use of certain vasoconstrictors affects the stability of blood pressure in some patients. In several emergency dental cases this has caused serious prophylaxis and other side effects. So, if you are prone to low or erratic blood pressures, you should ask your dentist to avoid the use of a potential vasoconstrictor. You should at least bring the issue for due consideration, so that they can adopt some alternative way to control a probable hypertensive reaction during the procedure.
Allergies contribute the next important factor that one should take care of while rushing into an emergency dental procedure. If you are allergic to certain genre of drugs or chemicals, then warn your dentist before he does anything. Allergies are unique for every individual and they manifest themselves in unexpected ways. So, as a patient it is your or your family's obligation to let the emergency department know about any allergic reactions you had had in the past which involved usage of any kind of medication.
The final advice is to stay calm in case of an emergency. This would help the emergency team attending your case to take better control of the situation. After all, dental procedures are nothing to be scared of. Besides, once you are admitted to an ER, no amount of panicking can keep you going.
