Premature Baby Can Recognize And Distinguish Different Things With Their Hands
The first moment after birth, full-term infants are subject to a high degree of tactile stimulation
. Their bodies contact immediately with the towels, bed sheets, nipples and other objects by bathing, grasping mother's belly and dressing. In short, they come to contact with materials with different textures, different shapes and different structures.
As is known to all, if we touch the baby's palm, he would immediately clenched fist, the response of making a fist is not just a simple reflection. Even in the first few hours after their birth, full-term newborns already have a valid perception and tactile capabilities which enable them to feel their surroundings. However, for premature infant, because of its early birth, nerve function is not developed completely. All the sources of perceptual knowledge, sense organs and sensory systems are not as perfect as full-term infants. How will the premature children feel the world?
In order to find out the answer, researchers did two experiments with 24 premature infants who are only two weeks old and gestation is 33 to 40 weeks. Their average gestational age when they are born is equivalent to about 7 months pregnant, their average weight at birth was 1,500 grams. The team adopted the experimental methods of habit-based and the novelty response, which is similar to use on the full-term newborns. This method relies on a simple principle: as for familiar items, human interest will gradually disappear, while for new or unfamiliar objects, the interest will be re-energized.
In the first phase, the researchers placed a small object in each childs hands and 12 infants are on the left hand, the other 12 babies are on the right hand. Once the baby release the object, the experimenter would place the object on childs hands again. In the progress, the researchers noted that time of holding the object drop means baby has been familiar with the shape of the object.
In the second stage, once the baby is accustomed to their first object, the researchers gave half of the baby to a new shape of object while the other half of the infants still grape familiar objects. The result show the time of holding new object is longer than holding familiar objects. This proves that the time of holding is reduced, not because the baby is tired, otherwise they are interested in new things.
