Prepare Ahead For College

Many people are excited to attend college for the first time but neglect in planning ahead which serves to make the experience much easier

. Many students will be moving away from home for the first time and will need to adjust to a new environment, brand new friends and a more strenuous workload. It's sure to be one of the most exciting moments in one's life and hopefully these tips will make your first days of school less stressful.

The first thing you will have to consider is where you will be living. Obvious choices include living in a dorm or sharing an apartment with other school mates. Living at a dorm will allow students to socialize more with peers and staff whereas living off-campus will provide for more independence. You can find housing in the area by browsing the newspaper and online directories. Often there will be a bulletin board on campus where students can post bulletins looking for someone to live with.

Make a list of all appliances and furniture pieces that you want for your new place. You will generally need a refrigerator, microwave, cookware and a bed or mattress. The rest depends on what you need and how much money you have available. If your finances allow for it, you might consider purchasing additional furniture.

It's a wise idea to get to know your future roommates ahead of time. You can do so by corresponding on Facebook or have a phone conversation to get a general feel for the other person. It might be a good idea to also discuss some house rules, for example how the chores will be divided up and if the cost of groceries will be shared or not. Who will be in charge of paying the utilities? Having rules in place is a good idea because it prevents arguments and fights.

When it comes to school books you can save a substantial amount of money by purchasing books online; this makes it a lot easier to comparison shop and see which vendors offer the most competitive prices. It's a smart idea to buy used books from other students as well. Both of these methods are generally more cost effective instead of buying a brand new book.

Walk around the campus area and to all of your classes ahead so you know where they are located at before the first day of school. This will prevent you from being tardy on the first day. Also make sure to familiarize yourself with the nearest grocery store, bank and gas station. It will be easier to adjust and less stressful if you get used to the campus and local area.

Decide if you will need a car of if you'll be using a bike or taking the bus. If you are staying in a dorm this won't be as much of an issue, but if you are living off-campus you might want to keep a car. If having your own car isn't an option, you may opt to bike and use public transportation as needed. In this case, make sure you have a place to keep your bike at.

Attending college for the first time should be fun and a memorable experience. Taking the time to prepare ahead will make the transition to college life much easier.
