Prepare Your Car For Any Weather This Summer

The British summertime has always been a temperamental time when it comes to the weather

, whilst we all wish for plenty of sun, it is quite often the case that we have wind and rain. If we are lucky with the weather this summer then a lot of British families will want to make good use of their summer holidays and go do something as a family. Whether this is going to one of the UKs many theme parks or going camping to enjoy the wonderful UK countryside and National Parks.

Since youll likely be driving to wherever you are planning to go and most likely a much longer distance than usual then there are a few tips to bear in mind to ensure you arrive safely on time and that your car doesnt suffer as a result. Driving in a variety of different weather conditions can require different measures to be taken, below are some tips for driving in the sun and the rain, for whatever the weather is next summer.

Rain

Starting with the worst, rain obviously makes the road wet but also your car, this can affect its handling, especially in a full car with all of your added weight of camping gear, bike racks etc. You should drive slower in wet conditions and leave a larger gap between yourself and the car in front. If you need to stop suddenly then either pump the brake pedal to prevent skidding or if your car has Antilock Breaking System, ABS, then hold your brake pedal down for the whole time you need to stop in order for the ABS to do its job.

Make sure your windscreen and rear window wipers are fully working too, if your windows are not getting cleared properly then you may need to purchase a new set. These are relatively cheap and simple to fit, a small price to pay for clear vision on the roads.

Sun

Even though the roads are dry this doesnt make driving whilst it is sunny any easier. Extremely warm summers can heat up the road and your tyres, again altering your handling. Changes in temperature can have an effect on your tyre pressure so it is important to always check your tyres before any long journey as you can spot any issues before they become a huge problem such as a puncture or flat tyre.

When driving in the heat you may become frustrated when sat in a queue, make sure you keep your cool by having a cold drink to hand and make good use of your cars fans or air conditioning if it has this feature. It may seem obvious but make sure all your windows are closed when you leave your car, even if only for a few minutes. Make sure rear passenger windows are shut as well as children may forget to close them allowing thieves easy entry to your car.

Make sure when driving this summer whatever the weather that you take extra care and driving safely to ensure your family are safe and everyone has fun this summer.
