Preparing For The Big Orthopedic Surgery Day
Orthopedic surgery is a serious procedure, and knowing what will take place once the day arrives can help you to be as prepared as possible
. You need to know what you should bring with you to the hospital, as well as when to arrive. If you have any last minute questions that you think of right before the anticipated operation, call your physician and ask.
Arrive early on the day of your orthopedic surgery. The operating rooms in hospitals are on tight and hectic schedules. If you show up late for your procedure, you may have to reschedule. This will prove to be a waste of time and resources, both for you and the medical facility. Avoid this by being not just on time, but early!
Before you are called in for your procedure, you may have to spend some time in the waiting area. Plan ahead for a possible wait by bringing along a book, magazine, or newspaper to read.
For the sake of your safety, you will not be permitted to eat or drink before your procedure. The duration of time that you will have to forgo eating and drinking will vary depending upon the type of orthopedic surgery you are having. The main reason that food is not allowed is because of the anesthesia. If your stomach is not empty at the time of the procedure, nausea and vomiting can sometimes occur.
For the patient who is having a surgical procedure that involves the abdominal region, you will be required to show up for your operation with an empty bowel. The surgeon will provide you with instructions for the type of preoperative diet that you must follow. It is important that you pay close attention to these instructions.
For patients who take medication on a regular basis, ask your doctor if you should take your medicine before the orthopedic surgery or not. In some cases taking it with a sip of water may be allowed, while in others, it may not.
When you are packing a bag to go to the hospital for surgery, pack as light as possible. Keep the items you bring with you to a minimum. If you realize that you need something that you did not bring with you, a family member or friend can pick it up for you. Pack some loose comfortable clothing, as well as a bag of personal care products (such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.)
Leave all of your valuable items at home. This includes your jewelry, expensive clothes, designer handbags, laptops, and large amounts of cash. It would be wise to leave your credit cards and your debit card at home as well. Keep in mind that cell phones of any type are not permitted in most medical facilities.
