Preparing For Your First Flight
Flying for the first time can be really scary
Flying for the first time can be really scary. The airports are huge and you may have worries about getting lost or not making it to your flight in time.
There are many things that you should know as a first time flyer. The first thing you should know is that every airport is different.
It can be helpful to get directions from a friend who has flown out of the airport you are going to as to where security is and which direction you should turn after security. However, do not rely on someone's knowledge of the Los Angeles Airport when you are flying out of Salt Lake City.
Airports are covered with signs and televisions with information designed to help you know where you should go and whether your flight is on time. If these boards are too confusing there are many information desks with personnel who would be willing to help you.
Even if you find it intimidating to ask the information desk for help, there are many people around you who could help you as well. Find someone who looks friendly to you and ask them for help interpreting the board.
However, before you leave for the airport there are several things that you should do. For example, you need to pack everything you need properly and carefully.
It is also important for you to know that airports do not allow you to take many different items because they could be dangerous to other passengers, used as weapons, or could potentially hide weapons from their scanners.
You are allowed to pack more of the restricted items in your checked bag because you will not have access to your checked bag. However, it is a very good idea to check the airport website to verify which items you can pack in checked luggage, which items can be taken in a carry on, and which items you should leave at home.
Even though you can take more things in a checked bag both because it is larger and because of the security measures, it does cost more. It is important to be aware of that fact and the fact that there is the possibility that your checked luggage could get lost by the airport or sent to another country before you receive it again.
On top of it, the airline will not do very much to make up for loss if they do anything at all. If they find out where it is, then they will fly it back to you, but this could be days later.
With a carry on, you are in charge of your stuff and if it gets lost it is your fault. When you arrive at your destination you can simply leave when you are ready to instead of waiting for your other bags to be delivered to the carousel.
However, you can only take one carry on. If you can limit yourself to one carry on you can save yourself a lot of money.
It is quite understandable if you cannot limit your things to a small carry on though. Be mindful that you do not pack your carry on too tightly.
Otherwise you could risk it popping open at the most inconvenient of times. In addition, the airport has a rule about how much your bags can weigh.
If you cannot lift it into the overhead storage bin, then it is probably too heavy. The maximum size of your carry on, checked bags, and purse sizes as well as their weights are different from airline to airline because the planes were made slightly differently.
Be careful to know what fees you will have to pay for checked baggage as well. After two bags, some airlines charge over $75 for the third bag.
At that point, it might be cheaper to priority mail it to yourself at your destination. It is also good to be aware that if you get on the plane and there is not enough room for your carry on, the steward will take it off the plane and have it checked, where upon arrival you will have to get it from the carousel.
It is also important to take the right documents with you to the airport. You will not be able to get through security without your bordering pass, photo ID, and possibly your passport if you are traveling to a foreign country.
Flying on an airplane can be very exciting. It is important to properly prepare though.
