Preparing Homes for winter from HVAC Contractors to Lawns

Winter is coming up soon

Winter is coming up soon. We can see it in the way animals are behaving, trees are turning the way the air smells. Kids are back in school and fall foods are once again hitting the tables. There are long to do lists being written to get ready for the long winter months ahead, especially since it's predicted we'll have another hard winter. The thought of scooping sidewalks and suffering through biting cold winds is enough motivation to get started on winterizing projects now.

By now lawns aren't looking so great. Leaves are falling and it's making it difficult to keep up with the messes. It's a good idea to use a bagging mower this time of year and start a compost pile in the back yard. Compost is wonderful and can be used first thing in the spring to start your own garden. Now is the time to trim back branches on trees, but remember to never take off more than one third of the growth or you will do some heavy duty damage to your trees and plants. However, if you don't trim now, you'll be sorry when dead branches crash through the roof after ice and snow storms. While you're out in the yard working, spread your fall fertilizers and clean up flower beds.

Other outdoor projects that need to be addressed are removing window AC units, cleaning out gutters and sealing up air leaks. It's best to have HVAC contractors remove AC units. Some NYC HVAC contractors store air conditioners over the winter and reinstall them in the summer. That's best for those who live in large cities and don't have room for storage. While NYC HVAC contractors are there, why not have them do duct cleaning to reduce the chances of having fires? Heaters should be inspected as well. A good HVAC contractor won't break the bank to do these things for homeowners.

Caulking around windows will save a lot of money this winter. You can spend an afternoon and a few bucks sealing up air leaks around the outside of your home and save big on energy bills this winter. Be sure to seal around dryer vents, put insulators on faucets and blow out sprinkler systems too. There are some great new tools to use to clean out gutters around the house that are cheap. Run down to the hardware store near you and see if you can find gutter cleaners with telescoping handles.

Indoor projects are going to be a little more labor intensive. Cleaning out closets, donating clothes, pulling out cold weather clothes and doing a thorough cleaning are all on the fall to do list. These projects can be done over the course of a few months, so take it easy and tackle one project at a time.

To be safe, have all your appliances checked and hood vents inspected in kitchens. These things aren't thought of often, but should not be ignored. Have your HVAC contractors check to be sure your dryer vents are vented properly and light the heater after his or her inspection is completed.
