Preparing] My Rooftop Garden

The roof top garden is simply a garden, usually in containers

, that is located on a roof top. Any building - an office, garage or shed, can have a rooftop garden if it is tough enough to take the further weight and has a appropriate surface.

A structural engineer will be able to tell you whether your roof is properly waterproofed and whether it will handle the additional weight of planters, soil, decking, furnishings and people.

Why do you want a roof garden? If you are looking to grow a container or two of herbs and vegetables that is one thing; or are you planning a garden where lots of people will visit? Or will your area incorporate flowers, shrubs and trees and be a location for entertaining and relaxingresting? I have even seen an orchard on a roof!

Do you have much time to garden? Keep the design modest is you don't have much time, you can always add more plants later.

The largest challenge to successful container gardening on a roof top is powerful winds and hot sun. You must have a rooftop water supply, outdoor electrical outlet and storage space for tool and supplies. Roof gardening requires plenty of water, so check how and where the roof drains.

Plastic, terracotta or wood are all popular choices for containers. During the growing season it will usually be sunny, hot, dry and windy so you must choose tough plants that will tolerate such conditions.

If you're going to grow permanent plants such as shrubs or small trees or perennials in containers, choose plants that are one or two zones hardier than your climatic zone. For example, if you're in Zone 5, choose woody plants that are hardy to Zone 3 or 4.

Some lath-type structures will allow some shade. You can use vine-covered trellising as a wind-break or privacy screen. A trelis or screen must be properly supported.

Drought tolerant plants are good choices, as they tend to be both sun and wind tolerant. If a plant has silver or grey-green leaves then it will reflect the coarse rays of the sun. Some have a coating of fine hairs on their leaves or stems, helping to trap moisture around the plant tissues.

A roof top garden is an ideal place to grow native perennials. They will be able to handle the ecosystem and you will be helping maintain the native plant population. They might even encourage visits from native birds and butterflies.
