Preparing To Cope With A Wildfire

Natural and man made disasters could strike you and your hometown at any moment

. Families across the country are realizing their great need to become prepared.

It is easy to rely on the services of local emergency personnel. However, everyone will be in need of their services during an emergency and they will not be able to help everyone.

You need to prepare yourself and your family to be prepared to deal with disaster on your own. One of the many things that may require the need for a pre-prepared emergency kit is the event of a woodland fire.

Every year, about 1.2 million acres of forests in America are destroyed by wildfires. These wildfires will not miraculously jump over your home if they sweep through the local area.

You must start preparing to deal with a wildfire before the fire comes. The first thing you will need to do is put together an emergency supply kit.

This kit should include non-perishable food, water, clothing, medical supplies, hand-charged radio and flashlight, and other family member specific necessities. Each member of your family should have one of the kits and there should be one placed in the car as well.

There are many places from which you can obtain these emergency supplies. In particular there are many food storage websites that simply post reviews on various food storage providers.

By reading these reviews, you can decide what kind of non-perishable food would be the best to store for your family. There are many different kinds of food that are excellent for food storage and each have their pros and cons.

For example, there is freeze dried food, Meals Ready to Eat (MREs), canned foods, and so forth. The food that is available for food storage has increased in nutritional value and taste tremendously throughout the past few years.

In addition to putting together an emergency kit for each family member, you will need to sit down with your family and create an emergency plan. You will not have time to create an effective plan when the disaster has started.

One of the first things you will need to know is how you and your family members will communicate or contact one another. You will need to set a meeting place a safe distance from your home where family members can gather if your home catches on fire without previous warning.

If you have previous warning of a wildfire, you will want to set another meeting place somewhere in town and another location well out of the range of the wildfire. It is likely that your family will not be together when the fire begins.

If you must leave immediately, your family will know where to meet up. Keep in mind that it may be difficult to get call your family members from across town.

During an evacuation or other emergency, the phone lines will probably be heavily used. Often, it is much easier to call someone who is well out of the disaster area and leave information about whereabouts and meeting places.

When your other lost family members also contact this person, they will be able to know where to go to meet up with you. It is also a very good idea to check with work places, schools, and day cares on what will happen in an emergency.

If these places do not have a plan you may want to help create one. You may end up saving lives in the future.

It will also be important to know where your daycare will take your child if they are forced to leave immediately for the safety of your child. You will want to know where to pick up your child.

Keep in mind that if you do not have a car you will need to find an alternative way of transportation before the disaster strikes. It is likely that most means of public transportation with either be shut down, or completely filled when disaster strikes.

Line up a ride with a friend so that they know to wait for you it an evacuation is ordered. If you do have a car, make sure that your car is ready to go at a moment's notice.

It should always have half a tank of gas and be up to date on things such as the oil and lube. When you leave, take your pets and emergency kits if it does not endanger your life.
