Check your headlights, as you will be putting yourself in danger if one is out and you are embarking on any journey in the dark, let alone a long one. Make sure the glass in the front of the headlight is clean too; otherwise the light won't be able to penetrate the grime.

Check your tyres are properly inflated, as this could cause an effect on your stopping distances and braking times. In the case of a pile up, you want your safety systems to be as quick and effective as they possibly can be.
