Prepping For Vacation from Arizona to Portland: Home Security Musts

There's nothing as fulfilling as taking a break from the daily grind to finally get to relax. And whether this means a full week of vacation or just a long weekend, a whole lot of Americans try to make summertime their time to get away for awhile. After all, it's nice to go skiing in winter and all, but something about escaping to a lake house or going on a houseboat for awhile means a different feeling of serenity.

Unfortunately, while you're getting ready to take a break, robbers are getting ready to work overtime. After all, it's not just the good guys that know most people like to get away during the summer months. Home security is compromised for most people on three-day weekends and other holidays, when families tend to go off on vacations together. And this is the sort of rise in crime that's not associated with a single state in the country. Those from Tucson are just as much at risk as those from Portland, where the instances of breaking and entering are also steadily rising.

However, just because there are people out there interested in robbing houses doesn't mean that you should have to sacrifice your vacation plans for a moment. In fact, planning increased home security before your trip away is something that shouldn't take very long, because it merely builds on the support system for your home that you already have in place. So getting ready for vacation only means a few tweaks. If you've been lax with how you spend your time prepping your home, then a quick one-over and a talk with the family about setting the alarm should do the trick to make your home a whole lot safer.

First, cancel your newspaper and mail delivery--or put it on hold until at least two days after your planned return date. Nothing is more welcoming to burglars than a pile of information that says "I'm not here right now." Being sure to hold it for a couple of extra days is crucial in a world of missed flights and travel troubles.

Second, be sure that you set that home alarm system. The minute that you're heading out the door, this should be on your mind. The last person out has to set the alarm, and it will only work if all doors and windows are securely shut, so be sure that this is the case as well. If you're going to spend the money to have an alarm in your house, then you need to learn how to use it.

Last, talk to your neighbors. Because people increasingly are living more isolated lives, it often does not occur to them that their neighbors can be friends as well as helpful. And for older people, the idea of being nice to those you live near is one of the more crucial elements of polite society. So consider not just your home security but the safety of the neighborhood, and start to talk to your neighbors. After all, if you look out for their home while they are on vacation, they'll likely do the same for you.
