Deadlines have always been stressful to many and productive to some. The reason why deadlines make some work better is the fact that they have the power to control their anxiety in a much better way than many can. Anxieties may be faced in different scenarios; they could be physical activities, such as races, games etc.; academics could be sitting a test, or presenting in front of a large audience etc. these different circumstances can make most of us nervous or anxious. What students need to remember is that fact that it is vital to maintain a decent level of anxiety since it is very helpful and productive, when controlled. The flow of adrenaline is natural and is in response to situations where the body prepares itself for action.
If you overwhelm yourself with anxiety, you could eventually lose out on your focus and not perform as well as you expected or if you can control it, you can perform better than you expected. But the point here is how can we control our anxiety to help us be more productive in our academic skills? Follow the steps and strategies listed below and you can work wonders during your study sessions.
Coping Strategies:
Focus " Try to make out what you need done. Once you have an aim, work your way by rehearsing the outcome.
Stop! " Within your mind, you will be getting images of other students taunting you, you will need to stop those thoughts. This may sound easy, but you can do it. Simply convert those thoughts of cheering or booing to cheers and applauses.
Timing " This is important; you will get more nervous if you are prompted for time, especially if you have not designed a good presentation. So before the BIG DAY, make sure you finish your presentation on time. If you finish it too soon, you lose marks, if you finish it late, you are in for trouble.
Relax " Before you begin your presentation, relax yourself, this will help you lose a lot of anxiety before the actual presentation.
Take a break " Take a small break or a small walk before the presentation, this will get your mind off the bad events and a little time to practice your presentation.
Relaxation Strategies:
Stretch " when anxious, your body muscles tend to contract, they need to be relaxed to help you reduce the nervousness on stage.
Breathe " begin with breathing deeply, this will relax your middle portion of the body where adrenaline is produced. A good way to do a deep breathing exercise is by:Close your eyesTake a deep breath so as it can completely fill your lungsExhale slowly.Use a soothing word or an image you have or scenery that you have in your mind, which relaxes you. Images or thoughts related to calmness or soothing are the best ways of quickly relaxing your body. This is very useful when done prior to presenting in front of the class. If you still find something threatening or problematic, you can always talk to your teacher or tutor to help you out with the matter. http://www.articlesbase.com/writing-articles/presentation-controlling-the-butterflies-3588202.html
