President Obama Has To Be On Drugs-BP Oil Spill Is Like Terrorist Attacks

It's finally happened. This whole tragedy concerning the hundreds of millions of litres of oil that have gushed into the Gulf of Mexico has finally crossed over into the absurd.

It's not enough that he's had to endure criticisms comparing his administration's response to the BP disaster with Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina, but now Barack Obama has gone and made things even worse for himself.

Speaking to Politico.com's Roger Simon last Friday, Obama really put his foot in it.

"In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come," the President of the United States said.

Okay, I can see the point he was trying to make, but was it not just a bit unwise to use the 9/11 terrorist attacks as a yardstick? Yes, this environmental tragedy is an awful, awful thing, and yes, someone needs to be held accountable and plans need to be put in place to prevent these accidents from happening in the future. But President Obama has really stuck his foot in his mouth and practically chewed his toes off in just one sentence.

So, what's wrong with comparing the two events? Well, Jim Riches, a former Deputy Chief with the New York Fire Department whose son died at the World Trade Centre on 9/11 put it succinctly when he told the New York Daily News, "These were terrorist attacks, these 9/11 murders, not something caused by people trying to make money."

Amen.

So what happens now? Obama may or may not apologise for this almost laughable verbal misstep, or he might just plough forward and continue pointing the finger in every direction other than his own. Time will tell.
