From Paul's letter to the Philippians Chapter 3 verses 12 through 16 read as follows from the NIV version of the Bib
12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
15 All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you.16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained.
This section of Paul's letter to the Philippians is talking about clarity and mature viewpoints in the faith, which will always be good news to press on w
While sometimes the emphasis within these verses in forgetting what is behind and reaching or straining or what is before.
This isn't about really just forgetting about the past only in the sense of forgetting the past and reaching for the future and being forward looking only as people also have good memories of the past that they can rekindle a bit and reminisce about.
This is also talking about attaining mature viewpoints in the faith, and understanding the need to let go and forget about prior viewpoints and understandings that may have been less enlightening or outright incorrect.
So maybe somebody new in the faith did not believe that angels are personally present, but the new mature correct viewpoint is that angels do appear to individuals.
This person can hold on to the new, firm and enlightened viewpoint and let go and forget about that past viewpoint that was incongruous with presenting realities of the faith.
Generally we want better more mature viewpoints on things. People in a secular sense might have somewhat false impressions of their own abilities and potentials, possibly holding on to false beliefs about the world, themselves, that ultimately can be detrimental as well as inaccurate.
This also relates to discovery. Someone for example might believe that they can't sing well, or they do not have an exceptional singing voice. Then they try and find out otherwise.
The new view they might have is yes, I do have a good singing voice which opposes the previously held belief. Having attained this new belief and insight about singing abilities, I can forget about the belief that I do not have the singing ability.
There will be the need for clarification, further understandings and discernment within the faith and as this does happen and is attained, the thing to do is forget about the past where the clarification was not there, the specifics were a little foggy and so on
That was but is no longer the case and to continue to backtrack into what was previously believed or unclear is not the thing to do.
The thing to do is to hold on to the mature view that has been obtained and stay with it by forgetting that you did not have this view in the past.
Even in dealing with your own issues, you might have had a poor view of yourself in some way in the past and having gotten a more mature and better view, there no reason to go back to that poor view and continue to predicate things on this poor view.
This poor view might have been draped upon you by others and taken on by you. The attainment of the new, mature and proper view, should also involve forgetting that old view and in a sense forgiving yourself for being so mistaken but also forgetting that you were so mistaken in this view.
A major point here is not only to at times forget about the past in a general sense, but also once having a more enlightened view of anything as per the help and instruction of the Lord, forget that past view and let it go away entirely.
Then concentrate totally on pressing ahead with the corrected view as the view that you are dealing with.
Getting back to the idea of angels and maybe at this time some of the Philippians did not believe that they could ask for angelic help. Finding out that they can do this is good news
Now that they are enlightened to this vision and reality of this help, they don't need to hesitate about calling upon the help of angels through prayer to the Lord as they press forward into the future, and there is now no need to backtrack and review the previously help false belief about this.
The prior erroneous belief can be forgotten and discarded totally and that includes the aspect of forgetting that you were wrong. You can forget about being wrong then and concentrate on being right now and press forward on what you are right about.
So someone finds out how creative they are in something such as painting art, and they were wrong about thinking that art was not there thing.
What they can do is now press ahead on the newly found and mature view that they are artistic and press ahead on being artistic while also forgetting about being wrong about being artistic in the past.
Just concentrate on the good attainment at hand and press forward on that
Another example might be that someone is finding out that the Lord is a lot more generous that they thought in answering prayer in mighty and great ways.
The thing to do is forget about a prior belief that it was difficult to find great generosity from the Lord and press ahead with continuing to pray for the outpouring of the generosity of the Lord in great ways for both themselves and others.
What Paul is emphasing here is as you get the new and mature clarifications, to discard the old beliefs and work with the go forward with the new mature view and the new clarity you have been given.
It is important to seek and work with the Lord in obtaining the mature viewpoints and clarity, but also it is important that once finding this, to hold on to the attainment and forget about the prior viewpoint and to only press ahead on the mature viewpoint that you now have and not to halfway go back to the less mature, possibly invalid viewpoint as you move ahead in the faith with the Lord in the relationship of prayer, faith and hope in his presence and the call to salvation.
