If you have wooden fences that covers the perimeter of your home, chances are your wooden fence is always exposed to the elements and that its quality has deteriorated greatly, especially if the wood did not receive any form of chemical treatment to help protect it from weathering. Aside from termites, the two most common enemies of wood are the sun and the rain. The sun's heat is liable for weakening the exterior structure of the wood thereby making it brittle, while the rainwater is responsible for soaking the wood and making it swell which in turn breaks down many of its inner fibers. The combined effects of both the sun and rain not only lead to the weakening of the wood, but it also leads to its discoloration making it rather unpleasant to look at.

There are some signs indicating that the wood on your fence is in terrible condition. If you notice any cracking and graying out, this means that it is being damaged by the sun's ultraviolet rays. If there are any warping or swelling, the likely culprit for this damage will be rainwater.

The best way to ensure that your wooden fence does not undergo that state is to make sure it is maintained and cleaned regularly. Applying wood sealants on the wood are least once every three years will help ensure that water does not penetrate into it to make it swell and destroy its inner fibers. This also helps in protecting the wood from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Regular cleaning of your wooden fence is also highly advised. Cleaning a fence is tough and demanding job. However, with a pressure washer, this cleaning task not only becomes simpler, it also becomes more enjoyable.

Before pressure washing your fence, take note of how much PSI your pressure washer unit can generate. It is advised to pressure wash wood with only about 500 800 PSI and anything more could potentially damage the wood. If your unit comes with a pressure adjustment, try to adjust it appropriately. However, if it doesn't, try to attach an appropriate pressure washer nozzle such as a wide fan spray to disperse the pressure and start pressure washing at a distance of about 10 feet. Try and shorten this gap until your desire cleaning effect is achieved. Make sure to take note of this distance and try to maintain it while you pressure wash your whole fence. It is advised never to use hot water on wood as this could damage the wood.
