Prestressed Concrete Railway Monoblock Sleepers

I have seen this technologyin the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I understand that "Prestressed Concrete Railway Monoblock Sleepers" was developed by Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), Chennai, India.

I came to know that this technology saved so many trees in the country and saved our environment from pollution. In India, the railway tracks are more than one lakh kilometer all over India. Initially they used wood logs instead of Prestressed Concrete Railway Monoblock Sleepers. SERC, Chennai developed know-how for prestressed concrete monoblock sleepers by long line method.

What the Invention here is, first the iron rods are strongly hold in both ends so that the iron rod will have so much strength and stressed. After that they put concrete filling and they keep some gap among the monoblocks. After certain hours of concrete setting, they cut the iron rods in between the monoblocks in the gaps. Then the excess (few centimeters) iron rods outside will go inside the concrete and the shrinking of iron rods and concrete gives so much strength to the monoblock. Now the monoblocks are prestressed and ready for use as a railway monoblock sleeper.

This technology was given and SERC, Chennai assisted a firm in establishing a factory production PSC railway sleepers at Kosikalan. SERC has given feasibility studies prodvided to several firms for production of sleepers.

After this technology, the whole railway tracks are in concrete monoblocks to give more strong foundation to the railway tracks and safety to the railways. The big benefit is that this technology saved many trees and helped the environment from the pollution.
