The book Presumed Innocent by Turow Scott is the story of "Rozat "Rusty" Sabich who holds the position of chief deputy prosecutor of Kindle County, and how his life gets complicated due to rape and murder of Carolyn Polhemus. The beautiful Carolyn Polhemus, a divorcee, was leading a promiscuous life and her murder proves to be a distraction for Raymond Horgan, the boss of Rusty who is up for re-election.

Too Well Loved By Her Colleagues

Carolyn was too well loved by her colleagues in the office, and the persistent rumours in the office only confirmed this (to some extent). If Raymond Horgan won the re-election, Rusty would continue in his job, and if he lost, Rusty would be finished. His affair with Carolyn ended several months ago when she dumped him.

Convicted Sex Offenders Are Under the Scanner

The book Presumed Innocent by Turow Scott covers the suspense well and even though there is a conflict of interest, still the investigation of the murder is being handled by Rusty because nobody else knows about it (the conflict of interest). Initially the convicted sex offenders are under the scanner of the investigators because Carolyn helped in prosecuting them. Rusty comes to know even his boss Raymond Horgan had a brief relationship with her. Rusty's marriage with Barbara is going through a rocky patch because she knows about the affair.

Rusty Welcomes the Assignment

The assignment is welcomed by Rusty since he knows he will be the first person to be implicated after a routine investigation, therefore he purposely destroys all the evidence that may implicate him. Later Rusty finds himself implicated into the case as evidence against him is being unearthed. He hires the Argentinean lawyer Alejandro "Sandy" Stern for his defense. Presumed Innocent by Turow Scott takes a serious turn as the evidence against Rusty is very serious since he made calls to her house in the night of her murder, and the investigators also found a bar glass with his fingerprints at the place. The prosecution is being led by the person who defeated his boss and friend whereas Rusty has only his team of lawyers to depend on and a mysterious file to save him from the charges.

Unpredictable Twists and Turns

The events in the courtroom undergo many twists and turns. The expert forensic testimony is proved unreliable in the court. Some surprising facts that tumble out are the judge also had a brief relationship with Carolyn, and that Horgan, Carolyn and the Judge used to accept bribes from the suspects. A piece of evidence goes missing and the case is dismissed by the judge due to lack of evidence.
