Prevent Bed Bugs From Crashing Your Holiday Celebration
From Poughkeepsie to Portland, bed bugs spread by hitching a ride with traveling humans - and the holidays represent the busiest travel season
. If you're planning on hosting a few guests during this holiday season, you can avoid a bed bug infestation by following the bed bug pest control tips listed below.
Store suitcases away from bedrooms. Eugene and Portland pest control experts advise storing guests' luggage away from bedrooms. After your guests have unpacked, move their bags into the garage or another area where bed bugs won't be able to hop from luggage to bedding.
Dress guest beds with light-colored bedding. From Paris to Portland, pest control gurus look for one dead giveaway that bed bugs are present: "blood spots," or tiny, dark specks of bed bug waste. White or light-colored sheets will make it easy for you to spot any bed bug feces. If you discover such spots, call a bed bug pest control company right away.
Tuck in blankets and sheets. Fortunately, bed bugs can't fly or jump. For this reason, tucking in blankets and sheets (to keep them from dangling) is a simple form of bed bug pest control.
Situate beds away from walls. Bed bugs love to hide in baseboards and walls during the daytime. As darkness falls, these miniature vampires emerge to suck the blood of their slumbering human hosts. Minimize bed bug hiding spots by moving guest beds away from walls.
Encase box springs and mattresses. Bug experts suggest using polyurethane or vinyl covers to encase mattresses and box springs. Bed bug pest control encasements create a barrier bed bugs cannot cross. If they are unable to hide in mattresses and box springs, bed bugs are unlikely to survive long.
Remove clutter. Remove any unnecessary clutter in your guest room, and add organizational hooks and racks to help your guests stay organized. This will reduce the number of locations bed bugs can hide between meals.
After guests depart, thoroughly clean guest quarters. Begin by placing guest bedding in plastic bags, which should be carried directly to your clothes washer. Immediately discard those plastic bags in your outdoor trashcan. Any items that might have come in contact with bed bugs should be washed in the hottest water possible. (Portland pest control experts know bed bugs can't survive heat over 113 degrees Fahrenheit.) You should also vacuum your entire home and throw away the vacuum bag, again in the outdoor trash.
Look out for signs of bed bugs. For a couple of weeks after your guests have left, you should be vigilant for clues that bed bugs may be in your home. Keep an eye out for both live bed bugs and their exoskeletons. Carpet edges, the undersides of sofa cushions and mattress seams are a few places bed bugs love to hide. Look for fecal dots and blood smears around heating vents, sheets, mattresses, baseboards and behind headboards. Lastly, if your family members are discovering mosquito-like bites upon awakening, there's a good chance your guests left a bed bug pest control problem.
Contact a local Tigard or Portland pest control company immediately if you find any of these signs. New York and Portland bed bugs alike multiply quickly, so time is of the essence in avoiding a nasty infestation.
