Prevent Hair Loss from Malazzezia Globosa
Speaking at the recent ACADEMY '05, American Academy of Dermatology's summer scientific meeting
, Zoe D. Draelos of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, dispels some myths about hair loss and puts things straight.
Dandruff is cause by a fungus called Malazzezia Globosa and it is said that it does not contribute to hair loss but Draelos begs to differ. She states that studies show that scratching the scalp for 90 minutes showed that this was enough time to remove all of the cuticular scale that covers the scalp. This covering is what protects the individual hairs on the hair shaft. Dandruff shampoos definitely treat the condition of dandruff but they cannot cure it. They leave a preventative film on the scalp prevents regrowth of this fungus so when you see dandruff, start taking care of your scalp to avoid any shedding.
A myth surrounding the use of medicinal shampoos is that they increase the
risk of hair loss. They are deemed chemical and too strong for already brittle hair. Draelos stresses again that the scratching of the scalp instead of the treating of the scalp disease will spur the loss of hair before any shampoo treatment would. The medicinal shampoos are improving all the time and the brands of today are catering for those who want to get rid of their problem without sacrificing the shine, strength or volume of their lovely locks.
For all of those 6am early risers, blow drying hair is said to boil the water in the hair shaft! The dermatologist recommends that you leave your hair you dry naturally before styling as this will protect the hair but also give it body.
If you have any scalp or hair loss problems, visit a dermatologist for the necessary prescriptions and advice. A lot of what contributes to maintaining healthy hair can be found in fruit and vegetables and a healthy diet but for those of us who are beyond healthy diets and who have tried every trick in the book, new and experimental research is on-going and one treatment in particular has been approved for the condition!
Androgenetic alopecia in men and female pattern hair loss are the most common types of hair loss that effect men and women. Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) had been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a possible treatment. It is understood as bio stimulation with low energy lasers.
LLLT has been shown to increase the blood flow around the scalp. Nutrient supply is activated, hair growth is stimulated, it can prevent anymore hair loss, lessens the risk for genetic thinning, corrects skin problems such as dermatitis, stabilizes the moisture balance of the hair, and improves the quality of the hair shaft. This kind of therapy has been suggested for use in pre- operative and post- operative procedures in hair restoration also. The safety and efficacy of this method is not 100% certain as of yet but we certainly know that this method works.
