When you bend over to pick something up off the floor, don't bend at the waist; instead, bend your knees to lower your body. Pick up the object and hold it close to you while using your legs to raise yourself up again. Keep your back straight throughout. Don't try to lift heavy objects by yourself; get someone to help you.

When you're standing in line or waiting for a bus, prop yourself up by leaning against a wall or post. Get a few stepping stools and keep them handy throughout the house. You can use them for resting one of your legs on while doing chores and activities that require standing. Sleep on a firm mattress and find a comfortable position.

Wear low-heeled shoes to avoid straining the muscles in your back. If you're overweight, go on a diet. The added pounds place a great deal of stress on the muscles of your back. Try not to sit in one position for a very long time; get up periodically to stretch and walk around for a while. If you do have to sit for long hours, place your feet on a low stool so that your knees are above your hips.

When seated at a desk, use a comfortable chair that supports the curve of your lower back. Play around with the settings until you are sitting with your feet flat on the floor and your knees at right angles; your arms should also form right angles at the elbow. Don't slouch, and don't lean backwards a lot. Keep your back upright but relaxed.
