Preventional flea control tips for your pets and home
"Mark but this flea, and mark in this, How little that which thou deniest me is; Me it sucked first, and now sucks thee". Thus wrote the poet John Donne in the reign of Elizabeth I in the early seventeenth century. This of course was the period of time when many English folk made the often treacherous journey across the Atlantic to the New World in search of a purer life. I found myself doing the same journey not so long ago when I moved to the East coast. The first thing that astounded me was the size of everything. The cars, the houses, the roads and more shockingly the insects! Those New World explorers must have faced many difficulties establishing a civilized colony. But as much as they wanted to escape the old regime of European strife, they couldn't avoid bringing disease, foreign bacteria and bugs with them. This the native Indians found out rather quickly. Thus continued the reign of the flea as it traveled abroad on back of rats. Fleas no doubt already existed in the New World but the rapid spread of the Europeans meant that disease followed at an alarming rate.
Back to modern times. I have been living in an apartment in Atlanta for the last three years and we have two indoor cats. An American gray longhair and a black Bombay kitten.
When spring arrives, there comes the dread of our apartment being infested by fleas, which is strange because our cats are not allowed outside at all.
I'm wondering if the flea eggs could have been in the apartment from a previous owner or if cockroaches carry them in when they scurry under our door. It maybe that they are coming in through the air conditioning as well. I am from England, so it's been a slight shock to see an increase in insect size and quantity which is common in the Southern States.
I've tried lots of natural solutions such as salting our carpet, but I still end up with fleas jumping on my legs whilst walking through our apartment. Using my legs as bait has been one of the most interesting baiting methods so far! But that still leaves the dilemma that these little critters breed like there was no tomorrow!
Apparently floating candles in bowls of water is good but I have to admit it wasn't until we finally called in a friend who works in pest control that the problem was rectified. Let me know if you have found any good cheap solutions that work as our apartment complex gets hit every year and other residents are looking for ways to protect their dogs and cats. Doing your own research on flea control is good but there will always be some important things you miss, so please feel free to comment on what has worked for you.
