Priest Leveling

As a priest you get some interesting playstyle options

. This is because priests are the only class with 2 different talent trees for healing. With 2 healing trees one might expect the priest to be lacking in the leveling department. Although you get some damage talents in your healing trees, you also have the option of leveling with your damage tree in Shadow.

What I dislike about leveling with Shadow is that you won't be able to go all out in damage as you won't be able to cover the mana costs. This leads to you having to cut out spells instead of using your full arsenal and killing much quicker.

Don't worry too much about this as when you progress through the levels you will get more and more tools to restore your mana. One of these is Dispersion which restores 6% mana every second for 6 seconds. On top of that you get shadow fiend which restores mana to you based on the damage it deals. Instead of all this talk let's get into the build:

I suggest you spend the points in the shadow tree as I did, then get the talents in Discipline. Then you can spend the remaining spends as you see fit. This should be based on factors such as your mana consumption, whether you're on a Player versus Player server and so on. The Shadow tree is filled with superb talents and besides Improved Mind Blast and Pain and Suffering you are free to pick up any talents depending on your needs. As such I recommend that if you find yourself desiring these talents you simply pick them up before heading over to the discipline tree.

Let's talk about some of the important talents. I suggest you go for spirit tap first. This talent will reduce your downtime significantly, especially once you pick up some spirit/intellect gear. After that go for Darkness into Mind Flay. Once you hit level 20 and get Mind Flay you should find yourself killing monsters considerably easier. The damage of Mind Flay isn't quite where it will be as you hit the higher levels but the snare is still vital. Once you pick up Shadow Weaving I suggest you do your best to make sure you keep this buff up. This means that whenever you kill a target you waste no time getting to the next target to reapply this buff. You will really notice having the 10% damage bonus up at all times. After obtaining Vampiric Embrace I urge you to make sure you keep the buff up. Keeping it up allows you to not worry about your health anymore, as it'll fill up as you do damage. This is key when you get Shadow Form, as it prevents you from healing without dropping the form, costing considerable mana.

Your next big pick up will be Vampiric Touch at 50. It should lead your opening rotation to be Vampiric Touch followed by Mind Blast. This gives you the replenishment effect to give you even better mana regeneration. This combined with the mana efficient and high damage of Vampiric Touch makes it a no brainer. Now you'll also be getting close to obtaining Dispersion. In most situations you will find yourself using this to keep your mana up, but it can also be an amazing life saver as for the 6 seconds duration it also reduces incoming damage by 90%. Yeah, 90%.

The Shadow Priest has a gameplay that one just has to like. Slaughtering multiple mobs is no problem at the higher levels with your DoTs and Vampiric Embrace. For those that want to engage single mobs you will find yourself easily killing monsters aswell. Being a prospective healer or damage dealer at 80, Shadow will quickly get you where you want to be.
