We all dream, and we all puzzle over what our intuition is trying to tell us through our dreams. Throughout history, people have wondered, what is my inner voice trying to tell me through my dreams?
Great novels that came through nighttime intuition.
And those who have studied the intuition coming to them through their dreams have reaped rich rewards. Like Mary Shelley who in 1816 was visiting the poet Lord Byron at his Lake Geneva villa in Switzerland with her fianc Percy Bysshe Shelley. After an evening of reading from a volume of ghost stories, Byron suggested that each of his guests write a ghost story of their own. That night, Mary Shelley dreamed of a student of black arts kneeling beside a creature he had put together--and, suddenly, the creature moved. From that dream came one of the most compelling stories of all time: Frankenstein.
Similarly, in 1886 Robert Louis Stevenson, working to develop the plot for a new novel, dreamed a scene in which a character pursued for some crime, took a mysterious powder and underwent a complete change of identity in the presence of his pursuers. That story, conceived, written, re-written, re-re-written, and printed inside ten weeks, became The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Invention at night.
In 1845, Elias Howe struggled with the idea of how to make a machine drive a needle through two pieces of cloth, joining them together. One night Howe dreamed that he had been taken prisoner by a band of natives who danced around him with spears. Howe noticed in the dream that the natives' spears had holes near their tips. When he awoke and thought about the dream, Howe realized that, if the hole were located near the tip of the needle, the thread could be caught after it went through the cloth, and the sewing machine was invented.
Solution to a problem comes through intuition at night.
In 1964, Jack Nicklaus went through a bad slump, regularly shooting in the high seventies. One night, he dreamed about his golf swing: "I was hitting them pretty good in the dream and all at once I realized I wasn't holding the club the way I've actually been holding it lately. . . .So when I came to the course [the next] morning I tried it the way I did in my dream and it worked. I shot sixty-eight that day and a sixty-five the next day."
Songs that came through dreams.
When Paul McCartney was filming Help! in London in 1965, he had a dream in which he heard a classic string ensemble playing and he awoke with a tune in his head. "I got out of bed, sat at the piano, found G, found F sharp minor 7th--and that leads you through then to B to E minor, and finally back to E. It all leads forward logically. I liked the melody a lot, but because I'd dreamed it, I couldn't believe I'd written it." The song that ultimately came from that dream was Yesterday.
Many other famous songs and arrangements have come from the dreams of song writers, including Roy Orbison's In Dreams, Johnny Cash's mariachis in Ring of Fire, Keith Richards' Satisfaction, and Billy Joel's River of Dreams.
The novel Misery came through intuition while asleep.
In 1987, Stephen King, flying to England on the Concord, fell asleep on the plane and dreamed about a woman who held a writer prisoner and later killed him. That dream became the novel and movie Misery, starring James Caan and Kathy Bates.
Your nighttime intuition.
We all struggle with problems, and we all dream. So take a lesson from the people throughout history who have struggled with a problem and who have found a solution in their dreams. When you're struggling with a problem and you've asked your inner voice for help, listen to anything that comes, but listen especially to what comes in your dreams, because that's the time when your intuition has your full attention.
