The organization needs to have commitment to improvement continuously.

Identify and control the impact of their activities, products and services on the environment.

Continuously improve its performance related to environment.

Systematically set objective, goals and target for environment and to achieve them. They also need to demonstrate that they have achieved these goals and targets.

Establish environmental goals:

Before implementing ISO 14001, the company needs to make an initial review of the products and processes or the elements that interact with environment now and in future. When a company conducts such a review it facilitates in establishing environmental goals, objectives and targets. This helps in controlling and managing the processes and procedures. It also emphasizes necessary legal requirements which can then be incorporated in the policy.

Implementation of process:

This step includes identifying the resources required and the people involved in the implementation and control of EMS. It also involves the documentation of all the processes and procedures and educating the employees for competent implementation of EMS.

Monitoring:

The performance is monitored and measured to ensure that the environmental goals and objectives are met.

Action to improve:

A regular review is conducted to ensure that the EMS objectives are met. Recommendations on further improvements of the system are made and they are incorporated in the EMS planning stage.

Process of improvement:

Expansion:

EMS should be implemented to maximum business areas.

Enrichment:

Maximum processes, products, resources, etc. should be covered and managed under EMS.

Upgrading:

There need to be structural and organizational changes in the framework of EMS. There should be a collection of know how in dealing with environmental issues of business.
