The brain has the peculiar capability to learn to ignore information that is of no consequence and this results from inhibition of the memory pathway. True long term memory depends on physical reconstruction of the synapses themselves in a way that changes their sensitivity for transmitting signals.
The principle of "use it or lose it" also governs active enhancement of brain memory soon after birth and even in adulthood to some extent. Therefore there is need to always exercise the brain for effective performance academically just as athletes exercise their muscles for optimum performance . This process requires 5 to 10 minutes for minimal consolidation and 1 hour or more for strong consolidation.
Psychological studies have shown that rehearsal of the same information in the alert mind accelerated and potentiates consolidation into long term memory especially new found information. Here lies the secrets of in-depth studying and efficient reasoning while studying. This explain why people can remember information studied in depth far better than that studied only superficially. It also shows that a person who is wide awake can consolidate memories far better than one in a state of mental fatigue.
Techniques to memory enhancement include the following; 1) Be interested in what you are learning, 2) Try as much as possible to comprehend while studying, 3) Concentrate and have no divided attention, 4) Relate what you are learning to life, 5) Paraphrase in your own words where necessary, 6) Visualise what you are studying for vivid images last, 7)Associate new information with previous ones, 8)Always review to improve your recall rate
