Printing Supplies : A Familiar Story Of A Struggle To Compete With China

Printing business is the most important and the oldest forms of business

. With new industries entering the market and new technology replacing the old, printing business has been successful to sustain its position and keep growing in the market. Printing is a process where images and text are reproduced with on various media. The printing industry is huge and there are so many different techniques.

Printing not only plays a pivotal role in the publishing industry but also plays an essential role in other commercial ventures. It’s hard to imagine any business that doesn’t involve printing, one way or another and for that reason when it comes to printing supplies, competition is quite fierce. There are a lot of printing suppliers in the market. Some of these suppliers target certain sectors within the industry such as screen printers and others tend to supply printing material for a multitude of printing industries from inkjet to flexography.

According to BPIF (British Printing Industries Federation), The UK is currently the fifth largest producer of printed products with a turnover of 14.3 billion, 10,300 companies and 140,000 employees. However in recent years, printing suppliers in the UK, the US and the EU have come under pressure as overseas suppliers take a more active part in the market. Chinese printing suppliers with their low labor costs and weak currency are at the forefront of undercutting cost of western printing suppliers. As we all know, this trend is not only limited to the printing industry. It’s hard to think of any product within any industry, not affected by the cheaper Chinese equivalent.

There are various forms of printing. One of its most popular forms is Screen Printing. With this technique, ink is blocked with the use of a woven mesh. Through a stencil, thick ink is forced to a finely woven mesh. Screen printing is used to print on almost all kinds of surfaces from leather, to T-shirts, from curtains to posters, bumper stickers and many others. New form of polyester based stencil films are also popular products within the printing industry.

Another popular printing material is cold laminating film. cold laminating film is designed to protect the materials printed with dye, ink and pigment. The best feature of this film is that it is non-yellowing. Cold laminating film is suitable for indoors as well as limited outdoor use and is available in gloss, satin and matt finish. Looking though a few B2B websites such as Alibaba.com and dhgate.com, you’ll find that the overwhelming majority of suppliers and manufacturers of cold laminating film are Chinese.

Another important printing material is “Polyethylene Terephthalate“ commonly known as PET film. PET film has many applications including packaging, printing, laminating, decoration and electrical insulation. PET film is one of the most reliable printing materials available on the market. The main feature of PET film is its resistance to moisture which makes it ideal for packaging. According to Alibaba.com, 87,558 suppliers of PET film are from mainland China, with India and South Korea trailing a long way behind with 1601 and 683 suppliers respectively.

As with others industries the Chinese seem to be stealing the show when it comes to printing supplies. It’s a familiar story. A steadily rising flow of cheaper Chinese products, flooding the market and putting western suppliers out of business.

Some argue that the influx of cheaper Chinese products is good for us consumers because it’ll help us save money. Others say that in order for us consumers to be consumers and to be able to buy the cheaper Chinese or Indian imports, we need jobs in the first place and the way cheap Chinese imports are putting our industries out of business, we’ll have no jobs left to consume their products!

It seems that the like other industries, the printing industry will continue to be challenged by the cheaper imported supplies for the foreseeable future.
