Private Label Rights: Your Licence to Sell Other People's Products As Your Own

For some reason there seems to be a lot of confusion around the subject of Private Label Rights products and how they can be used by internet markers. At its most basic somebody else creates a product and, for a one-off fee, allows you to sell it and keep all the profits for yourself. The product owner has benefited from your fee and you are now free to sell the product to as many customers as you can without having to pay any more commission.

The cost of a PLR licence can, of course, vary quite considerably but a good rule of thumb is that many licences seem to cost in the order of ten times the purchase price of the product in question. Some may cost less and others considerably more but ten times purchase price' is a handy frame of reference to act as a guide.

The main thing to remember with PLR is that you are actually buying a licence to do certain things with the product in question and this may also come with restrictions which set out things you must not do.

For example if you create your own product then you have total rights to do with it exactly as you please; you can give it away, sell it online, hand it out to strangers in the street, box it up with other products, the possibilities are endless. But with PLR products you will be buying a licence which typically contains a list of do's and don'ts associated with the procuct in question.

Here are some typical terms and conditions which might come with a PLR product:

Can be added to Membership Sites.

Can be packaged as a Bonus Product.

Can be bundled into a Package.

Can be retitled.

Can have new graphics added to the artwork.

Can have your name as author.

Cannot be given away free.

Cannot be sold on eBay.

Cannot be used as blog content.

Cannot be added to an Autoreposnder eCourse.

Now this is just an example of possible restrictions you may find with a PLR product but each licence is unique and you must comply with the terms and conditions of your licence.

I know one internet marketer who bought a PLR package which he intended to rebrand and sell as his own material and he couldn't wait to get started. However he only got round to checking out the terms and conditions after he had bought the rights and found that the licence would not allow him to change a thing and specifically prohibited him from rebranding the material in question.

Now, nearly a decade later, this PLR package sits on a shelf in a storeroom, never having been used. It was a costly lesson and one my internet marketing colleague never made a second time. You can obtain PLR products in many varied niches and in many varied forms including e-books, home study courses, DVD and CD sets, written books and manuals and software programs.

The product owner or developer may offer them with PLR rights for a number of reasons, for example, he may be content to sell to one geographical market and offer PLR to another geographical area while others have no interest in selling at all and are content just to come up with products for the PLR market alone.

Now as my colleague found to his cost, you must never just select a private label product at random or without fully checking out the terms and conditions which come attached to it. Remember that you are buying a licence to do something with a product rather than simply buying a product to sell.

As always the best way to start is to do your own online research. Use the internet to search for your niche term' plus PLR products' and you may be surprised at the amount of results you get. (Obviously if your niche is highly specialised there may be few or no PLR products on offer so bear this in mind also.)

Now, like most things in life, there are good PLR products, not so good ones and really awful ones and it is up to you to do your homework and pick the good products which you should be able to sell well in your niche.

One final tip if you cannot find any suitable PLR products is to approach the owner of a product you are interested in selling and asking whether he would consider selling you a PLR package. Of course he might say no' but he might also agree and you could find yourself with a hot selling product you can take to market just from sending off an email or two.
