Problems with Large Research Universities and Living Expenses
Just as is the case with anything else, universities do a lot of business based on name recognition. The famous research universities oftentimes find themselves in a position where they don't even have to compete with other universities for students. Their name recognition is sometimes enough to keep their enrollment high and to make sure that they have a constant supply of new students coming in every year. Unfortunately, international students who go to these universities oftentimes find that the environment makes things much more difficult than they would be at a teaching university in a smaller city. There are several different reasons for this; one of the biggest reasons is money.
If you're going to a prestigious research university, chances are that the price of everything is much higher than it would be at a university in a smaller city. For example, the cost of living in large American cities is much higher than it is in the smaller cities. This doesn't just mean rent. For international students, transportation, housing, food, supplies, and just about everything else will be considerably more expensive in the city than they will in a smaller area. Many US students opt to go to teaching universities in smaller cities for just this reason. Even though they may be able to afford the tuition at a large research university, they wouldn't be able to afford the living expenses.
At teaching universities, there is generally more housing available for international students. Some universities may require that you live on the campus and others may allow you to live off campus. In either case, smaller US cities generally have more housing at better rates than bigger cities do. This is simply because of supply and demand. In the largest cities, people compete vigorously for even the most basic apartments. Those apartments come at a high price, which may require you to work long hours, detracting from your time to study.
When you're considering studying in the US as an international student, money is always a big issue. One of the ways you can reduce the impact of finance on your ability to get a good education is to look into attending a school in a smaller city. Even smaller American cities tend to be very diverse, have plenty of resources and plenty of things to do to amuse yourself when you get a break from your studies. The big cities may have glamour, but that glamour comes at a very high price.
