Proceed With Caution- How To Handle Dental Emergencies

Whether you are at home or traveling, dental emergencies can happen

. It is important to remain calm and to be prepared for a potential emergency. Trauma to the mouth and teeth can be reduced if action is taken as soon as the injury occurs. Even the smallest injury should not be ignored because the problem can increase the risk of permanent damage as well as the need for more extensive treatment down the road.

Accidents to your teeth, lips, cheek and tongue can happen at any time. If you know what to do when these situations arise, it could make the difference of saving or losing your tooth. There are simple, everyday precautions that you can take in order to help avoid any injuries to your mouth. Since any injury to the teeth or gums can be potentially serious, always seek treatment from your dentist as soon as possible to avoid the worsening of your injury.

Toothaches

If you have a toothache, rinse and floss your teeth to ensure the area is free of all food or particles that could be lodged around the tooth. Some people may try to place an aspirin or another kind of pain killer on a painful tooth, but this is not an appropriate measure. The use of pain killers on the tooth can actually burn your gum tissue, rather than helping ease the pain.

With toothaches, your pain can come from the pulp, often characterized by spontaneous throbbing. Your bite could also feel different, and pain may feel like it is radiating from the ear, temple, or cheek. The majority of the time with toothaches, it is hard for you to identify the exact cause of the toothache or which tooth is causing the pain. Visit your dentist as soon as possible if your tooth is unbearable.

Soft Tissue Injury

Bleeding may occur if your tongue, lips or cheek are bitten, cut or punctured. Apply firm pressure to the injured area with gauze or a clean cloth. If the bleeding does not stop within 15 minutes, contact your dentist immediately as stitches may be needed. When bleeding does not occur, clean the area with warm water on gauze or a clean cloth. Apply an ice compress to the bruised or swollen area and contact your dentist for further instructions.

No matter what type of injury, remaining calm and getting to your dentist quickly are the best things that you can do when faced with a dental emergency. Getting to a dentist within 30 minutes can make the difference in the protection of your tooth. Call your dentist immediately if you exhibit any of the symptoms of a dental emergency. The life of your tooth rests in how equipped you are for a dental emergency.
