Procrastination - Facing Up to a Sordid Subject

Recently I sat down to write an article about the sordid subject of procrastination but, as usual, time got the better of me and I procrastinated all over again. The good news is that I did put the subject on my list for the next day and now, I'm almost two sentences into the story and look highly likely to finish on the same subject. You may have guessed by my referral to it as the 'sordid subject' that I have something of a problem in this area.

This is a topic I often avoid because I know, sooner or later, a word will come up that I believe is the root cause of procrastination. That word is fear. If you'll permit me to digress for a second I'd also like to point out that I've got a theory about fear, it kills faith. I like to explain it this way...

Firstly, faith is important. When you get on a bus you invest a reasonable amount of faith that the bus driver will take you where you want to go - providing you got on the right bus of course! Now, since we've moved onto the issue of public transport, I'd also like to say that bus drivers are fine but I don't have the same level of faith in cab drivers. I took a ride in a big city with one of those guys once and I don't know why but he took me all over the place. I think he thought I had hired him to be my tour guide. I went down a whole heap of streets I never knew existed but to be fair, he eventually got me to where I wanted to go. As you can imagine though, that journey was more about the fare than being fair.

Now where was I? Ah yes, faith. The point I was making was that we act on faith intuitively most of the time but we can loose it too. I don't know about you but the worst thing I ever lost was faith in myself. That's a really bad and dangerous space to be in. Somehow I just couldn't see my way out of things. Everything, absolutely everything, was just too much to handle.

Looking back on that time I can honestly see that the word procrastination covers it well, although I wouldn't admit it at the time. These days I find there are simpler words that mean the same thing. Surely the word procrastination was originally coined by a psychologist who wrote long articles for which he was paid by the character count.

The subject here is difficult one for me because I also know there's one other word I need to bring up before I round everything off. That word is change. If you can accept that procrastination is a form of fear and that fear kills faith then what is the solution? Well, it may sound simplistic but I can tell you that the solution is change.

You have to change what you are doing to get to where you want to go and that involves taking certain steps.
